Abstract
Urinary schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease that causes severe morbidity among school children in many poor-resource communities in Nigeria. The prevalence and intensity of urinary schistosoma infection was recorded among secondary school students in Aliero town, Aliero Local Government, Kebbi State, Nigeria. Status of schistosomiasis among students is essential for effective treatment and control programmes. Samples were collected by using simple random sampling technique and was analyze, using the standard parasitological techniques. A total of 400 participants were enrolled for the study. 10ml of urine samples were collected from each participant into universal containers between May and July 2023. Overall prevalence (49%) of urinary schistosomiasis recorded in the studied area was moderate with low mean egg intensity of 12.12 eggs/10ml of urine. The infection with urinary schistosomiasis is not related to the type of school, age and gender of students (p>0.05). Infection with urinary schistosomiasis is related to water. contact activities of the students in the studied area, with students that visited the water bodies for fishing with the highest prevalence (91.66%) and highest mean egg intensity (22.91eggs/10ml). Schistosoma haematobium was prevalent in the study area and all students have equal chance of being infected. Mass chemotherapy and health education on simple health promoting factors are highly recommended.

Key words: Urinary schistosomiasis, Prevalence, Intensity, Secondary school, Aliero town
