EFFECTS OF BIODISC ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF AFRICAN MUD CATFISH, Clarias gariepinus (BURCHELL, 1822)

Abstract
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of Biodisc as a potential growth enhancer in fish farming using Clarias gariepinus as biological model. Formulated basal diet was energized with Biodisc at different time interval of 6, 12, and 24 hours with the exception of the control group. The 63-day feeding experiment was conducted in concrete tanks with each treatment having three replicates. Fish fed 12 hours Biodisc-energized experimental diet (T3) recorded the best growth performance with the highest mean weight gain (MWG, 19.47 ± 3.32g ), percentage weight gain (PWG, 663.18 ± 73.84%), average daily weight gain (ADG, 0.31 ± 0.05g), relative weight gain (RWG, 86.82 ± 1.24g), standard length gain (SLG, 5.87 ± 0.58cm), total length gain (TLG, 6.50±0.44cm), average daily total length gain (ADTL, 0.11 ± 0.06cm), specific growth rate (SGR, 3.22 ±0.15), survival rate (SR, 96.67 ± 1.42%), and condition factor (K, 0.85 ± 0.09), while the least growth performance was observed in the group fed 24 hours Biodisc-energized experimental diet (T4) although the group had the highest average daily standard length (ADSL, 0.18 ± 0.22cm). Statistical analysis showed no significant difference (P>0.05) between the least values observed in T4 and the control. The result of this study infers that Biodisc can be used as a growth enhancer in fish culture towards profitable fish farming.
