A MINI REVIEW OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder arising from a deficiency of the hormone insulin by beta cells of the pancreas or inadequate insulin action by the target cells. It is characterized by an elevated blood glucose level, which results in derangement of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins metabolism, leading to changes in metabolic flux and flows of metabolites that cause damage to some body organs, especially nerves, neurons, kidneys, eyes and blood vessels. This review is an exposition of metabolic aberrations and alternative metabolic pathways occurring in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.
