Abstract
The present study was carried out to evaluate the anthelmintic activities of crude aqueous extract of stem bark of Pseudocedrela kotschyi, fruit extract of Balanites eagyptiaca, leaf extract of Acacia macrostachya, and root of Gardeniaerubescens used by small-holder farmer in Zuru Emirate, Nigeria on nematode parasite, Haemonchus contortus. The plants parts were collected after administering questionnaires in the study area. The collected plant materials were shade dried, grinded to fine powder and extracted using ethanol. In vitro anthelmintic activity of each plant was tested using prepared extract at 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/ml and positive control being Albendazole administered at 0.125, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0mg/ml concentrations and the negative control which contained 4mls of phosphate buffered saline. Each trail was done in triplicate with the controls. Mortalities of the adult worm were determined at interval of 24 hours. Data were statistically analyzed to find out the plant that significantly had the highest mortality. P. kotschyi induced higher anthelmintic activity significantly (p<0.05) (9.25±0.33), followed by B. eagyptiaca (7.63±0.33), A. macrostachya (7.00±0.33) and G. erubescens (5.33±1.15) respectively. However, there was no significant different (p>0.05) between the ethanol extract at 400mg/ml and Albendazole at 0.125mg/ml concentrations. The findings shows that P. kotschyi could yield natural alternative treatment product for H. contortus. However, further studies are required to determine its in vivo nematocidal properties and safety.

Key words: Anthelmintic, In vitro, Haemonchus contours.
