IN-VITRO ANTHELMINTIC ACTIVITY OF GARCINIA KOLA AQUEOUS SEED EXTRACT ON THE INFECTIVE STAGE OF STRONGYLID NEMATODES OF GOATS

Abstract
The study was conducted to determine the in-vitro anthelmintic activity of Garcinia kola seed extracts against the infective stage of Strongyloide from goat. The plant materials were extracted using cold maceration method. The feacal samples were collected and tested for the presence of Strongyloide egg and cultured for infective larvae. Larvae were tested with different concentrations of aqueous extract of the plants. In-vitro anthelminthic activity of the plants was evaluated in Petri dishes. Aqueous extract of the Garcinia kola seed was subjected to in-vitro anthelminthic activity into four concentrations of 50mg/ml, 150mg/ml and 200mg/ml with 5mg/ml, 15mg/ml and 20mg/ml of doses of Levamisole as positive control, and 4mls of Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) that served as the negative control for a period of 24 hours to determine the most effective plant extract. The result shows that Albendazole recorded the highest mortality effect of 100%at 15mg/ml and 20mg/ml, 93.3% at 5mg/ml. The G. kola seed extract had a mortality effect of 53.3%, 66.6% and 73.3% at 50mg/ml, 100mg/ml and 150mg/ml respectively.
