PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF PISTIA STRATIOTES(WATER LETTUCE) METHANOL LEAF EXTRACT IN ALBINO RAT

Abstract
Pistia stratiotes has a wide range of traditional medical use, particularly for the leaves. The current study used albino rats as test animals to examine the phytochemicals and antioxidant properties of methanol leaf extract from Pistia stratiotes. Pistia stratiotes leaves that were collected in Ilorin, Nigeria, were recognized and verified by the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Ilorin. Phytochemicals were found in the samples using specified reagents, and their existence was confirmed by variations in color or precipitation, in accordance with standard procedures for phytochemical screening. The presence of various bioactive secondary metabolites constituents in flavonoids, saponins, phenol, alkaloids, and tannin was revealed by quantitative phytochemical analysis of pistia stratioles methanol leaf extract, while the qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the highest concentration of saponin (2.24 ± 0.52 mg/ml), followed by phenol (1.34 ± 0.055 mg/ml), and tannins (0.67 ± 0.35 mg/ml). Alkaloids (0.048 ± 0.06 mg/ml) and Flavonoids (0.045 ± 0.011 mg/ml) were the phytochemicals with the lowest concentrations. However, when compared to the control group, the activities of antioxidant Medicinal plants have been discovered and utilized throughout human history, and many of the drugs that are today prescribed by doctors have a long history of use as herbal treatments. parameters (Reduced glutathione, Superoxide dismutase, and Glutathione perioxidase) indicate no significant differences (p>0.05). The antioxidant capabilities of pistia stratioles methanol leaf extract protect normal cells from oxidative damage, according to these data.
